Nothing is easier than picking up a book, and few
things can be as transformative.
Here are some I love along with my reviews linked:
- The Biology Of Belief Bruce Lipton combines an understanding of Cellular Biology and Quantum Mechanics to show us the most powerful tool we have at our disposal for optimal health, happiness and vitality… Our thoughts and perceptions.
2. The Brothers Karamazov Often referred to as “The best novel ever written”, there aren’t many novels that pack this much depth into so many archetypes. Through this novel we can explore the human psyche in a beautiful way that opens the door for some thorough self reflection.
- <—I recommend this translation by: Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky
3. Iron John This is a fantastic book for diving deeper in the masculine energy and a fun mythological entry point to the idea of the meta journey of a man, or “The Hero’s journey” of the predominately masculine archetype.
4. The Celestine Prophecy This book had a profound impact on me at 18, I’d also say the first novel that spoke to me on a purely spiritual level. The kind of book that when you’re done reading, theres nothing you want more than to fully love and be in the world and what a feeling that is.
- The first choice for anyone wanting to read something to inspire, enlighten or “activate” them.
5. Musashi This novel has taken a place in my heart that will belong to it forever. This simply is a novel of the life of a Samurai learning to live “The Way” but the beauty, intensity and eloquence packed into this novel sets its apart from anything I’ve ever read. Absolutely exceptional novel in my humble opinion.
6. Man’s search for meaning This was the first book I read from a list of books given to me by a mentor at 14. Needless to say, I was wildly attracted to the title at that point in my life, maybe at whatever point you are in your life its easy to discredit this book by its title. What’s presented in this book is not what you’d expect and is a book that gave me a foundation, an anchor, if you will of gratitude that will undoubtedly stay with and keep me grounded for the rest of my life.
7. The way of the peaceful warrior This is a beautiful book that opens the door for a way of being that is unrestricted, blissful and inspiring… fully present and fully authentic. When reading this book I was deeply moved by the opportunity presented of choosing to live like this and how it can, and does, unlock uncommon levels of connection, energy and joy.
Have not reviewed this one yet.
8. Zorba the Greek Although not exactly the same, this book presents something very similar to the book mentioned above. This is a book that shows two men, one who is clearly “alive” and one who is clearly “living”. A wonderful novel that opens one’s eyes once again to a way of approaching life that is highly individualistic in the purest sense of the word.
9. Eleven Minutes This novel begins looking at what the difference is between having “sex” and “making love”. I think this is not only important reading but even essential for anyone who’s never considered the potential for sex being something wholly spiritual, transformative and ritualistic. These ideas are presented through the medium of an entertaining and spicy novel from a woman in the sex industry.
10. Cupid’s Poisoned Arrow This is a wonderful book to read if you are in a relationship and or struggle with spark, passion and intimacy in your intimate relationships. She outlines ideas behind how habitual orgasmic sex can lead to chemical warfare happening between you and your partner and suggests opportunities that divert you away from having a Dopamine dependent relationship to a stable relationship supported and nurtured by Oxytocin. Even if you disagree with the science presented, the tools she provides us with through this book are without a doubt useful in intimate relationships and all relationships for that matter.
11. The Book Of Mirdad One of the most densely packed spiritual novels I’ve ever read. A really beautiful deconstruction of the Ego and of how what we cultivate internally manifests externally. I would note that its a cryptic novel and should be read with an inquisitive eye.
12. 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership This is a wonderful book, and disregard the idea of a “leader” and simply think of yourself as the one who is in control of your own life. This book gives you incredibly simple and profound commitments you can make with yourself to radically transform not only your inner dialogue and level of reactivity to situations but your whole life for the absolute better in the sense of higher levels of peace, purpose and positioning.
13. A New Earth This is a profound book that I would not discredit based on whats commonly said about the author and his books. People discredit this as “new agey” and I don’t recommend prescribing to that sort of small mindedness. This is a book about the ego and how the it can be effecting us and potentially running our lives. This book drove me near crazy when I read it at 19 but I can guarantee that the healthy integration of what this book teaches into your worldview can greatly increase your level of joy, productivity and empathy. No review for this one yet.
14. Notes From Underground This is one of the most amazing analyses of an archetype ever done. Maybe you are not this person all the time, but you certainly have been before. This is something I love about Dostoevsky is his ability to teach us by presenting us with a window into meta real character giving us a mirror to reflect back on ourselves to deepen inner and outer understanding and empathy.
15. Conversations with God For me, this book was a beautiful bringing together of many abstract spiritual and philosophical ideas I loosely held. The books ability to assimilate lots of different ideas into a more coherent frame of reference is remarkably comforting and enjoyable.
16. The Picture of Dorian Gray This novel has some of the wittiest and most hilarious one liners out of any book I’ve ever read. I have to say, for someone of my disposition, this is one of the greatest and most entertaining of novels ever.
17. Who do we choose to be? Wow! Absolutely one of my favorite books on contemporary leadership. The idea of being an “Island of Sanity” has never felt more pertinent to me. She gives an amazing historical account of civilizations throughout time to justify her ideas of where she sees ours heading and I have to say its magnificently inspiring and another book that makes you want to get out and be a beacon of light, love and sanity in the world.
18. Candide This one may not be everyones cup of tea but this short and centuries old novel had me head over heels laughing. The “Satirical realism” displayed in this book makes it one of the most entertaining reads for me to date.
19. Great Expectations This is an essential coming of age story, I read this at 18 and it was perfect. An understanding and pondering of the journey presented can save us all much suffering.
20. Shogun Not only is this book wildly entertaining it presents levels of beauty and complexity unparalleled. I never found enough time for this novel, I could read for hours and not want to put it down. It excites, fascinates and mystifies.
21. The Glass Bead Game This is Herman Hesse’s final book. Herman Hesse is an amazing writer and this book encapsulates the entirety of his wisdom, skill and humor perfectly. Another amazing novel to read by him that’s much shorter and less esoteric is Siddhartha which I reviewed in the Himalayas and is a gorgeous review I must say.
